About

Motitory is an independent product studio based in Japan. We make grammar apps for language learners and a calendar for people who need to find time together, and we publish small tools that run in the browser.

It started with two everyday frustrations. Studying Japanese, we couldn't find an app that explained what actually separates two patterns that translate the same way. Making plans with someone close meant either showing them your whole calendar or trading message after message. Neither is a big problem, but both come up all the time, and they deserved a proper answer. What we want from here is plain. We want to make products people pick for themselves and find worth paying for, so the studio can support itself and keep improving what it makes without leaning on hype.

Who makes this

Motitory is one person: a Korean developer who has been living and working in Japan for a few years. The first wall I hit here was the language, and not only the grammar patterns above. Everyday life was full of small things that tripped me up every time: the Japanese era calendar on forms, fields that insist on full-width or half-width characters.

If working as a developer has taught me one thing, it is that friction like this usually goes away with one small, well-made tool. So I started with the ones I needed myself. Anyone who moves between Korean and Japanese has probably gone looking for them at some point.

The name is Motivation plus Story, and there is nothing grander behind it. Learning a language in a new country, building products alone and keeping at it: I hope that story nudges someone else to take their first step. That is what the green light on the logo's key means, too. motivation: on.

How we decide

What we weigh before adding anything new.

Know only what's needed

We skip the server when we can. When an app does need one, it gets only what the feature uses, and you decide who sees what. Anything you chose not to share isn't just hidden on screen. The server never sends it.

Show what the result means

A learning app shouldn't stop at the right answer. Ours explain how the meaning would change if you picked a different one. A calendar should make it clear what is visible to whom. We want you to understand the result, not just see it.

Machines help, people check

We use AI and automation heavily for writing code, drafting translations, testing and deploying. We don't treat AI as a fact-checker. App releases and posts on this site go out after a person has read and approved them, and when something is wrong, fixing it is on us. Learning content that hasn't had a human review yet is labeled as such in the app.

Useful enough to keep

We don't use streaks, leaderboards or nagging notifications to keep you hooked. The aim is apps people keep using because they help, and that feel worth paying for. That is what lets the studio pay its own way and keep improving what it makes. We don't promise exam results either.

How things are made

The apps are built in TypeScript with Expo for iOS and Android, and only the ones that need a server use Cloudflare Workers and PostgreSQL. AI and automation help with the building, but a person checks and decides what goes public. This site is static HTML.
