^1.2.3 vs ~1.2.3 in package.json: npm version ranges and the 0.x trap
By default, ^1.2.3 accepts stable releases from 1.2.3 up to but not including 2.0.0; ~1.2.3 accepts 1.2.3 up to but not including 1.3.0. SemVer vs npm, 0.x, prereleases and lockfiles.
Is 1.0.0-rc.1 lower than 1.0.0? SemVer pre-release precedence and caret ranges
Why 1.0.0-rc.1 is lower than 1.0.0, and why ^1.2.3 does not select 1.5.0-beta.1, based on SemVer 2.0.0, node-semver and Cargo.
