How does hiragana ⇄ katakana conversion work?
Each kana maps to its counterpart one to one (か ⇄ カ). The long-vowel mark ー stays, katakana with no hiragana form (ヷ, ヸ) stay, and half-width katakana (ｶ) are widened first.
What is the Hangul result?
The spelling of Japanese in Korean under the Korean loanword orthography (외래어 표기법). For example, とうきょう is 도쿄 and さっぽろ is 삿포로.
Why are long vowels missing in Hangul?
The orthography does not write long vowels (とうきょう → 도쿄, おおさか → 오사카). A separately pronounced う, such as at the end of a verb, can be dropped for the same reason.
Does it read kanji?
No. Kanji have several readings that the characters alone cannot decide, so they are kept as they are. Enter the reading in kana.
